As Myanmar prepared to celebrate the Thingyan Festival, our teachers asked the 1st year students to raise their hands if they thought they would be THE student who has developed their English and computer skills the most at the end of their first year - to our surprise many of them raised their hands. It is encouraging that the students see themselves developing their skills and abilities because of The Esther Project. We interviewed a couple of the students about their progress and this is what they said (we have not edited their responses in form or context).
Ms. Deborah (a 1st-year student in Yangon)
“I am Deborah. I feel I am blessed to have an opportunity to study English and Computer at the Esther Project. I am enjoying studying here with my friends. My four elder sisters in my orphanages joined the Esther Project last year. I saw they were happy learning here and also improved their skills. I wanted to be like them. When I first came to the project, I was afraid and shy because I am very weak in English. I am so scared to speak in English language. But now, I am making a big progress. I couldn’t make English sentence in my own idea. I knew only very few words. I think it is just around fifty words in total. But now, I can make my own English sentences As my teachers encourage me always to speak bravely, I find it comfortable to speak in English now. I am also very excited about the computer class. I learnt new things I have never learnt. And I believe I am making more progress.”
Mr. Dawt Bik Thang (a 1st-year student in Yangon)
“My name is Dawt Bik Thang. I think I am making lots of progress here. I learnt many new English vocabularies and able to speak more English language. I am very encouraged to see some students work very hard. And the level 1 students are doing good. Among them, I like Mr Joshua. He is good at English and works hard. I am happy to study at the Esther Project. And I think it is helpful for every one of us. I hope I will learn more and develop my skills.”
Ms. Nun Tluang Pen (a 1st-year student in Hlegu)
I carefully listen to my teacher when they are teaching in class room. With carefully and sincerely I can memorize what I have learnt in my class so I don’t need to study again after class is over, in my home. I felt upset when I heard that the center (1) student, one of my friends, her marks is more than my marks though I got first position in center (2) its made me very happy. Something came to my mind; that is I must try hard and to achieve first position than who got first position in center (1). I felt a little bit sorry to my teachers because in fundamentals, center (1) has gained first position. I give my thanks to Esther Project and it’s founder. May God bless you.
